International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

To arouse the international community's attention to the problem of poverty and mobilize to help the poor countries to take concrete action, advocacy and promotion of the eradication of poverty around the world work in December 22, 1992, the 47th United Nations General Assembly in accordance with the United Nations Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the proposal to determine the annual October 17 as "International Day for the Elimination of Poverty" (International Day for the Eradication of Poverty), called on Member States to disseminate and promote the work of the eradication of poverty throughout the world to take concrete action to help the poor.

The world's 49 least developed countries are 34 countries in Africa. Since 1990, the global number of people living in extreme poverty decreased by 1.3 billion, but in sub-Saharan Africa's extreme poverty from 313 million to 227 million.

Poverty is the "silent crisis", not only has seriously hindered the socio-economic development of poor countries, but also the current regional conflicts, the spread of terrorism and environmental degradation of one of the major causes. The eradication of poverty has been the United Nations and other international organizations to discuss important topics in recent years. In 1990, the "International Decade for the Fourth United Nations Development Strategy", "18th UN General Assembly special session of the Universal Declaration" and the same year in Paris at the second meeting of the Least Developed Countries adopted the "90's assistance to the least developed National Program of Action "and other documents of developing countries have sustained economic development and poverty eradication as the primary strategy of international development goals and international cooperation in priority areas. 1995 United Nations World Summit for Social Development focused on the eradication of poverty, social harmony and promoting development issues, and adopted the "Declaration" and "Program of Action", at the same time in 1996 to determine the international poverty eradication years, from 1997 to 2006 for International Decade for the eradication of poverty. In September 2000, the United Nations Millennium Summit unanimously adopted the "Millennium Development Goals", a commitment to world by the year 2015 people living in extreme poverty and hunger by half the population. 2005 is to promote the achievement of the Millennium Goals of the crucial year. The United Nations hopes to commemorate this year's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, called upon the international community to work together and take effective measures to turn promises into reality, on schedule to achieve the Millennium Goals.

The United Nations International Day for the Elimination of poverty in 2007 on the theme "poverty-stricken population of change" and is intended to emphasize the poverty-stricken population in the eradication of poverty in their own irreplaceable role.
